Winter party 2015 volunteers
You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for the Annual Winter Party in the Park on January 18. Special guests Mayor Jim Watson and MP, Paul Dewar came to join the festivities as judges for our inaugural Soup Cook-off. The spirit of the event was stoked by horse drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, children‘s activities, good company and a golden fire. Amidst the air, sounds of children's laughter, skates hitting the ice and friendly neighbourly talk warmed our hearts. Appetites were quenched with homemade savoury soups, delectable sweet delights and good ol’ fashioned hot dogs. It’s the magic of the simple moments that brings us back each year to spend time with our neighbours at this lovely occasion.

We are grateful to all our five chefs who shared their soups with us to be judged - Judges Choice for the winner was a Carrot, Orange, Ginger soup prepared by Carol Workun. Volunteer Skate and Chili Cook-Off 2014 – a heartwarming success!

Valentine skate 2014
The community came out in large numbers to enjoy the Community Activities Group of Old Ottawa East (CAG) fourth annual Valentine Skate in Brantwood Park on Friday, February 14. We also welcomed a new tradition this year with The first annual Community Chili Cook-off. The rink was decorated beautifully in a valentines theme, a beautiful lit tent at the side of the rink for serving of the chili was a welcome and decorative addition to the event and when it was time for a warm up, skater took to the field house for a warming hot chocolate and a restorative hot dog. A little live music notched up the ambience in a delightful fashion…

The judging of the Chili Cook-Off was a close race with all submissions declared delicious and two recipes tying for first place after the first round of judging. Final honors went to Jason Byers and Carrie Hunnicut-Byers who won the Al’s Steakhouse gift certificate. Runners up were Ana Genio and Pablo Villanueva who took away a great GUSTOTV swag bag.

Several community members commented that they were proud that their neighbourhood puts on such first-rate events. CAG is proud of our volunteers for having such community spirit that makes this possible.

On behalf of the Board and the community our sincere thanks goes out to all who added to and supported the “moving parts” of such a large event including:

Our CAG Volunteer and Special Events Committee, Chair, Melanie Gilbert, and her army of community volunteers: Lisa and Todd Dunnett, Christine and John Scales, Maureen Ward, Marina and Jim Lamont, Dale Lamont, Marnie Drover, Sarah Workun, Catherine Pacella, Kevin Farrell, Suzanne Gagnon, Fred and Thoma Simpson, Sandra Lawless, Heather Jarrett, Margot Montgomery, Dave Macki, Jim Fraser, Ramine Shaw.

Chris Knight and Ella Ward-Crawford who along with CAG Chair, Nick Masciantonio judged the chili competition. And Taryn Manias for stepping in to break the tie. Tough job, but someone had to do it!

Our Chili Chefs, Jason Byers and Carrie Hunnicut-Byers, Ana Genio and Pablo Villanueva, Todd Dunnett and Carol Workun

Cookie Bakers, Alyssa Bissonnette, Marina Lamont and Lisa Dunnett

Prize Donors, Al’s Steakhouse and GUSTOTV

Cindy Courtemanche and her rink volunteers for providing the great rink.

And finally a special thank you to the many Community members who shoveled anonymously after the storm. There was a lot of snow!

A picture perfect Winter Party in Brantwood Park!

Brantwood Park looked like a winter wonderland as Old Ottawa East residents gathered on January 19 to celebrate the annual Winter Party in the Park.

Hosted by the Community Activities Group of Old Ottawa East (CAG), this event is always a highlight in the community and the perfect way to celebrate all that winter has to offer in Ottawa. The rinks were busy with new skaters just learning how to stay upright, to more advance skaters testing their abilities in a friendly skills competition. Others tried snowshoeing, some enjoyed tobogganing, and a fire pit was available whenever someone needed to warm up. The Rideau River was also the perfect backdrop for enjoying a horse-drawn sleigh ride around Brantwood Park.

Inside the field house, CAG volunteers served up plenty of hotdogs and a whopping 10 gallons of hot chocolate! Food and activities were free to all who participated in the winter party, and $220 was raised through generous donations.

This CAG event was organized by the CAG Event Team under the leadership of CAG Board member Melanie Gilbert. Despite almost calling it off due to rain, to bracing ourselves from high winds and plummeting temperatures, the Winter Party was a success! Thanks to all the Old Ottawa East residents who come forward to pitch in, this annual community event brought close to one hundred folks out to spend an afternoon outdoors on one of the most picturesque rinks in the city. While skaters whirled in the wind, the horses faithfully pulled children and adults along the Rideau River, Trevor Allen and Geoff Cass launched a neighbourhood broomball scrimmage and Jason Bailey with his sons Samuel and Benjamin, lead a mini-might tug-of-rope. Andrew Crawford built an awesome snow screen to shelter the fire and Cara and Jenny-Leigh kept it stoked till the end of day. In the warmth of the field house kitchen, Claire Farid, Nick Masciantonio, Maureen Ward, Catherine Pacella, Christine Loth-Bown, David, Carole-Anne Owen, Carol Workun and Marcia George served up neighbourhood hospitality and countless hog dogs and cups of cocoa.

We had a few special guests drop in out of the cold, our MPP Yasir Naqvi, with his son Rafi, and Mayor Jim Watson. This isn`t just any field house this is a happening one!

We’d like to acknowledge the generosity of Loblaws at Pretoria for donating refreshments, rink volunteers for providing the community with such a great winter experience and our intrepid team of volunteer poster-ers who make our event notices visible throughout Old Ottawa East.
