After School Care for Kindergarten Students for 2017-18

Due to changes made by the Government of Ontario to the Child Care Act that comes into effect in the 2017-18 school year, CAG must make changes to the after school care we provide.

Brantwood Fieldhouse
After school care for junior and senior kindergarten (JK and SK) children will no longer be possible following the 2016-17 school year.
The decision to cease service there was made after much deliberation, and was based on factors such as the following:
• Proximity to the river
• Lack of a gated yard
• Size of the building
• Number of older children registered in after school care
• Feedback from the licensing office
Parents who were planning to register their JK or SK children for after school care at the Brantwood Fieldhouse can either register them at the Old Town Hall or explore other options.

Old Town Hall
Following conversations with provincial staff and assistance from the Andrew Fleck Child Care Services, we feel optimistic that the Old Town Hall could meet the requirements for an after school care program for junior and senior kindergarten children.
CAG is currently pursuing the acquisition of a license for the Old Town Hall. This process could take three to four months to complete.
If a license is obtained, we will have room for up to 16 JK and SK children at this location.
Some changes would be implemented with the new after school care:
• Due to increased costs associated with a licensed program, the price for one of the spots in this program will be $300/month.
• The kindergarten program will operate in the downstairs room, Grades 1 – 6 in the upstairs room.
• There will be no change to fees for the Grade 1 – 6 program which will continue in its current form.

What can you do to help?
In order to continue providing after school care for kindergarten students, we need two things from you:
Register: We need to ensure that there is interest in continuing after school care for this age group at the Old Town Hall. Please register your child as soon as possible in order for us to ensure the feasibility of the program. A minimum of twelve registrations will be required for the program to run. Registration opens at 9:00 p.m. on May 25 at www.OttawaEastCAG.ca.
Reach out to your school and school board: Currently, the Francojeunesse bus stops at the Old Town Hall and Lady Evelyn children are walked over. We are assured of bus drop off for Elgin Street students. For children from other schools to be accommodated we will need busing for them direct to the bus bay at the Old Town Hall. You can help us ensure that kids that sign up for the program in the future will also have the option of busing to their care service by reaching out to your school and school board with a request for buses to include this stop on their route.

What are your other options?
After school care at the Old Town Hall may not be the solution for all families. Other options, such as after-school care offered by your child’s school, may be a better option for you. To learn more about other possibilities, please contact you Member of Parliament’s office, as they are compiling a list of available after-school care spaces in the community.
We continue to work with our provincial partners to provide you with more information about all the options available to you. Any updates will be posted to this page.
